Importance of Bhagavad Gita

Following is an excerpt from the lecture on the Importance on Bhagavad Gita by HG Vraj Bihari Prabhu.

This is a reading from Srimad Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 9 entitled “The most Confidential knowledge”. Lord Krishna says that it is the king of all knowledge and the purest form of knowledge which gives direct perception of the self by realization. First six chapters of Bhagavad Gita deal with Karma yoga and the last six deal with Gnani yoga. The middle six (7 to 12) deal with Bhakthi yoga which conveys the essence of Bhagavad Gita. We can only get this most confidential knowledge through a bonafide guru. All our problems are due to ignorance and lack of knowledge. We all are looking for happiness without knowing what the knowledge of real happiness. Krishna says that Bhagavad Gita is a manual to use this human form of life. It will help us to understand “Why we suffer and how to get out of suffering?”

Highest form of happiness is to realize the constitutional relation with Godhead, the Krishna. Krishna says that to get real happiness, one has to be a devotee and get the knowledge of Bhagavad Gita. Devotees will also get problems and sufferings but he knows why he is suffering and started the treatment “chanting and association of devotees”. By studying Bhagavad Gita, we can see the hand of Krishna in our daily life.

We distribute this topmost knowledge through Srila Prabhupada’s Book on Bhagavad Gita. We can get four things which are practical benefits, through this service of book distribution. First benefit is humility. You have to be humble and feel like servant to have humility. We have to surrender to Krishna and understand our insignificance. We cannot attract Krishna without humility. Srila Prabhupada experienced lot of humiliation and setbacks while distributing his periodical “Back to Godhead” but he showed humility instead of hurt and anger. We should be humble and understand that we are only a small part of a bigger process and we should do our work sincerely and leave the rest to Krishna.

Second benefit is adventure and fun. Book distribution and Preaching are amazingly adventurous and exciting activities. If you compare it with the daily activities of your past or daily activities of other people, you will find Book distribution and preaching as adventurous and exciting. You will meet many different types of people and get so much exciting experience. When a devotee goes out and gives Krishna, he will receive the embrace of Krishna also.

Third benefit is realization in Krishna consciousness. We will get realization when we see the sufferings of other people and try to give them Krishna. You can see people from close cutters and can understand the realization you have. Fourth benefit is the dependence on Krishna. Dependence on Krishna will increase when we remember of Krishna often which we can get through preaching. Dependence on Krishna can increase the peace and satisfaction that devotees cannot get on failures. We need desire to remember Krishna, discrimination to avoid things that we did not need, determination to stay focused and dependence on Krishna to become successful in Krishna consciousness.
