Smart phones and Foolish Humans- Part 1

“If we continue to develop our technology without wisdom or prudence, our servant may prove to be our executioner.”

–         Omar Bradley (former General of the US Army)

Since World War II the acronym WMD alarms many – some feel uneasy, others secure and many proud if their country possesses it. But what is it?

Weapons of Mass Destruction- WMD

Since the early twenty-first century, the acronym came to mean Wireless Mobile Devices (WMD) and thanks to Apple, Samsung, Sony, HTC and a dozen other world players with high speed 4G mobile broadband, we now have 2.6 billion people on this planet using smart phones. And what do we do on these gadgets? Check messages, attend calls and believe it or not many use their phones even while passing stool. Over forty per cent of the smart phone users suffer from Nomophobia, as in no- mo-bile- nomo- phobia- the anxiety of being disconnected from friends. People now need their mobiles even during shower and sex!

Maybe WMD can now be called as Weapons of Mass Distraction! Maybe we now have all the right technology but it probably exists for all the wrong reasons

The cost of technology is loneliness

The modern tech hungry culture is taking a heavy toll on our inner peace. Ironically we are now more connected feel more disconnected.

Loneliness, a ‘quiet devastation’ as one New York Times article referred to it as, is now reaching epidemic proportions. In one interview, John Cacioppo, the director of the University of Chicago’s Centre for Cognitive and Social Neuroscience, and who has been studying loneliness for over twenty years, said, 20% of Americans felt lonely in the 1980’s but in 2010 the figure was closer to 45%.

There is now a growing popularity and body of work that suggests there is a direct link between the two-increased uses of smart phones, and growing percentage of loneliness. Albert Einstein’s words ring true, “It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity” Einstein appealed in one of his letters that the need of the hour now is that human spirit must prevail over technology. To be continued…
