Lord Chaitanya’s pastimes- The nourishment for the soul- Part 10

“The thoughts of My pure devotees dwell in Me, their lives are fully
devoted to My service, and they derive great satisfaction and bliss
from always enlightening one another and conversing about Me.” –
Bhagavad Gita (10.9)

When little Nimai was a few months old, once mother Sachi went to
Ganga to fetch water. In her absence, Nimai decided to play a trick by
breaking many earthen pots. He had all pots and utensils scattered and
he lay between them, as if nothing had happened. When mother Sachi
returned, she was shocked to see the mess and alarmed the neighbouring
ladies. They all analysed the situation and concluded that a wicked
demon had attacked to kill the child, but because of their prayers to
Lord Vishnu, the baby was protected. Baby Nimai smiled, watching their
concerned and animated discussions.

When the Lord began to crawl, they performed one ceremony to see the
natural characteristics of the child. They put various articles in a
room- sweets, food, playthings, jewellery, clothes, money, and Srimad
Bhagavatam. Jagannath Mishra spoke to Nimai, “Oh child, if it pleases
you, please pick whatever you desire the most.” Soon, Nimai crawled
and rushed to pick up Srimad Bhagavatam. Everyone rejoiced and the
elders in the assembly declared, “This child will spread the glories
of Srimad Bhagavatam.”

Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, as a baby brought immense delight to his
family and the neighbours by inducing them to chant Hare Krishna
whenever he cried. One day he began to learn to walk. The Supreme
Personality of Godhead, the source of all incarnations, had now learnt
to walk! Holding the hands of Jagannath Mishra, the child struggled
and stuttered, and slowly He became confident enough to walk by
Himself.

When the ladies did kirtan, He ran inside and outside the house; He
was restless. He went out and collected bananas, sweets and other
fruits from neighbours and shop keepers and brought them inside the
house and shared with the ladies. The Supreme Lord thus began his
service to His devotees who sang the Holy Names. Thus Chaitanya
Mahaprabhu, the Lord of the universe, whom the great yogis and Jnanis
are always worshipping, is serving the simple ladies of Nawadwip. He
ran with eagerness to bring gifts for these women.

Thus the Lord showed, right from childhood, that He loves to serve His
devotees. They were anxious to please Him by congregational chanting
of Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare
Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare. And in return, He wanted to serve them.

Likewise, if we always chant the Holy Names of Krishna, Nimai will
give us the sweetest of all sweets, and that is love of Krishna-
Krishna Prem.
