Do you accept yourself the way you are? – Part 2

are supposed to be and embracing who we are” – Brene Brown

The Indian wisdom book, Sri Isopanishad, declares that we are complete
the way we are:

“The Personality of Godhead is perfect and complete, and because He
is completely perfect, all emanations from Him, such as this
phenomenal world, are perfectly equipped as complete wholes. Whatever
is produced of the Complete Whole is also complete in itself. Because
He is the Complete Whole, even though so many complete units emanate
from Him, He remains a complete balance.” (Isopanishad, Invocation)

We are unique and serve a special purpose in being who we are.

A doubt may plague some of us: How do I expand my business or rise in
my career if I accept myself the way I am?

We need to examine the basic platform of our ambitions in life. Are we
situated on a foundation of being at peace with ourselves, or is our
desire created on our imperfections and inadequacies? If it’s the
former, then we’d likely evolve, grow and contribute from a space of
abundance- we live in acceptance of the self. But if it’s the latter,
then we are in denial, and our ambition is sliding on a slippery,
throttling base.

How do I practically become more self-accepting?

Ask a simple question to yourself: do I live in a ‘gap’ space or the
‘gain’ space?

Many people see their inadequacies and limitations, too often. They
live in the ‘gap’ space. Or even if they get a windfall or they excel
in a project, they are wired to feel discontented rather than
celebrate the success. Their happiness is fleeting and they are
inherently craving and dissatisfied. A man said he took a pizza home
to surprise his teenage daughter. As soon as she opened it, her first
response was, “Dad, this isn’t the one with besto pesto sauce. You
know this isn’t my favorite!” The girl lived in a ‘gap’ space.

One in the ‘gain’ space sees what good things he has done or gained
today. This keeps him in a gratitude and appreciation zone. Then, as
he navigates one event after another or an unexpected crisis, he’s
ready. If the first thing you meditate on is your ‘gain’, then you are
living a life of ‘acceptance’ and you can slowly but surely work on
your gaps as well. But if your foundational existence is a gap, then
even if you get success, you’d always feel a lacuna pricking your

We need to end every day on a ‘gain’ note and thank our blessings for
the day. I know a friend who keeps a small diary where he notes down
at night, before retiring, all the good things he did, or all the
life-enhancing experiences he had during the day. He sees it
reflectively and revisits the best of those events- the top three in
the list and basks in its fulfilling nature. The exercise keeps him
satisfied and the much-needed approval that we all seek from the world
is fulfilled easily for him- he gets it from himself! Of course, he
admits that although he now needs no one’s endorsement, a kind
appreciation from others is most welcome.

We all need encouragement and love, yet as the world busies itself
with its needs and worries, we need to take care of our souls. And we
begin self-care by first feeling a sense of worth and completeness.
It’s in this state of accepting ourselves and being complete, that we
work on improving our existence.
